As I Wake by Elizabeth Scott

As I Wake by Elizabeth Scott
Dutton Juvenile, September 15, 2011

Summary from Goodreads:
Ava is welcomed home from the hospital by a doting mother, lively friends, and a crush finally beginning to show interest. There's only one problem: Ava can't remember any of them - and can't shake the eerie feeling that she's not who they say she is.
Ava struggles to break through her amnesiac haze as she goes through the motions of high-school life, but the memories that surface take place in a very different world, where Ava and familiar-faced friends are under constant scrutiny and no one can be trusted. Ava doesn't know what to make of these visions, or of the boy who is at the center of them all, until he reappears in her life and offers answers . . . but only in exchange for her trust.
Ack! A new Elizabeth Scott! That's TWO this year! I think what I love most about Elizabeth Scott is her ability to write--and write well!--in a variety of genres. She's a master of contemporary fiction, both light and dark, with Grace she showed us she can handle dystopian, and As I Wake is a book of a different color altogether. I'm not even sure how to categorize it--sci fi? Paranormal? It does have a touch of dystopia in it, but it also has a contemporary feel.

Are you confused yet? Well, then, just imagine how Ava feels when she wakes up in a place she's never seen before, not knowing who she is or why she's there. We suffer right along with Ava as she struggles to discover who she is--and if that person is the same person everyone else is claiming she is. It's an exquisite book, a theme that's not new but is presented in a fresh way. The readers know exactly what Ava knows--nothing--and we learn as she does.

It's one of those books that stays with you long after you've finished it, and once you're torn through it, you should give it a more careful second reading. You'll be glad you did!

Own book.

Enjoy your reading!
