Sean Griswold's Head by Lindsey Leavitt
Bloomsbury USA, March 1, 2011
Read for YA Contemps Challenge

Summary from Goodreads:
According to her guidance counselor, fifteen-year-old Payton Gritas needs a focus object-an item to concentrate her emotions on. It's supposed to be something inanimate, but Payton decides to use the thing she stares at during class: Sean Griswold's head. They've been linked since third grade (Griswold-Gritas-it's an alphabetical order thing), but she's never really known him.
The focus object is intended to help Payton deal with her father's newly diagnosed multiple sclerosis. And it's working. With the help of her boy-crazy best friend Jac, Payton starts stalking-er, focusing on-Sean Griswold . . . all of him! He's cute, he shares her Seinfeld obsession (nobody else gets it!) and he may have a secret or two of his own.
In this sweet story of first love, Lindsey Leavitt seamlessly balances heartfelt family moments, spot-on sarcastic humor, and a budding young romance.
This was a most adorable story, a wonderful contemporary novel. Payton is an incredible narrator; we love her, her snark, and her quirks. The subject is serious--her dad has multiple sclerosis and everyone has been keeping this fact from Payton, causing her to freak when she does find out--but it's dealt with in a warm manner. Payton's counselor suggests she focus on an object during this stressful time, and Payton chooses Sean Griswold's head, because as a result of the closeness of their last names, it's been next to her, or in front of her, for the entirety of her school life. Therefore, it's always accessible.

What Payton doesn't realize is that while she's known Sean Griswold's head forever, she's never taken the time to know Sean Griswold himself. And once she starts her focus exercises, of course she realizes what a mistake that is!

Sean Griswold's Head is really a sweet, fun read.

Borrowed book from library.

Enjoy your reading!
