Imaginary Girls by Nova Ren Suma
Dutton Juvenile, June 14, 2011
Read for 2011 Debut Author Challenge

Summary from Goodreads:
Chloe's older sister, Ruby, is the girl everyone looks to and longs for, who can't be captured or caged. When a night with Ruby's friends goes horribly wrong and Chloe discovers the dead body of her classmate London Hayes left floating in the reservoir, Chloe is sent away from town and away from Ruby.

But Ruby will do anything to get her sister back, and when Chloe returns to town two years later, deadly surprises await. As Chloe flirts with the truth that Ruby has hidden deeply away, the fragile line between life and death is redrawn by the complex bonds of sisterhood.
With palpable drama and delicious craft, Nova Ren Suma bursts onto the YA scene with the story that everyone will be talking about.

I'll have to mark this one down as unfinished--which doesn't really ever happen for me. It takes a LOT for me to give up on a book. I tried so hard to get into this book, but I had to put it down when I was just halfway through. I really tried to like Chloe, but ultimately I got the sense that she thought of herself as an extension of Ruby and not her own person. And Ruby, I just couldn't get why everyone was so enamored with her. I just didn't see it. I had difficulty following the story, or even caring about it. Other reviews say that you have to get 250 pages into it before everything starts making sense, but my feeling is that if it takes that long to get into it, it's not worth my time. I feel so bad for not finishing it, thought. Am I really missing out?

Enjoy your reading!

  1. Wow, sorry to hear you didn't enjoy this book. I've been waiting for my library to get it in, but I think I may hold off reading it for a while. Thanks for sharing!

  2. I loved this one. I told myself it was a dream, and that nothing was going to make sense. I think what I liked so much about it was that it was so unlike anything else I had read lately (some YA is just so formulaic). Here the characters do such unpredictable things, and over everything is the sense that this one firecracker of a girl rules everyone in town. If you want to save the time, I can share the big reveal with you!
